Derrida's deconstruction of psychoanalysis in "La Scène de l'écriture" is re-examined here through a reading of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, starting with a two-handed scene of writing (involving Jekyll's and Hyde's hands), as devised by Stevenson. Looking for the novel's scene of writing as repressed by the metaphysical myth, trying to understand its dramatic impetus, helps us to formulate the narrative stakes as they equally come into play between Derrida and Freud, in the former's text.Reading the novel thus will be a means to adumbrate what a deconstruction of psychoanalysis can bring to literary interpretation — as opposed to applying either theory.Publié
